April 7, 2011
The annual Wellman Easter Egg Hunt will be held this year on Saturday, April 16th at 10 am. We will be holding it again at the North Park. There will be plenty of eggs and goodies for the kids so bring your family on the 16th. The month of April has been designated 9-1-1 education month in Iowa. This is such a valuable service and we have a fantastic group of people who run the Washington County 911 service. I have been involved with the County E911 and Communications Commission for over 5 years now and I know that we are very lucky to have the service that we do in this County. There are many changes that are currently occurring with E911 service across the country. The federal government has mandated switching to all new “narrow banding” equipment in the next few years. This means that we have to get new equipment in the communications center along with all new portable radios, pagers, etc. for the police, fire, and ambulance services throughout the county. One of the problems with this federal mandate is that funding for E911 has been decreasing with more people getting rid of their home phones and just using cell phones (in Washington County E911 currently receives $1.50 per month from land lines and about 65 cents from cell phones). Our county has been preparing for this for several years and purchasing new equipment so thankfully we are right on schedule for the new regulations and we shouldn’t have any issues in Washington County.
