The Wellman Skating Rink
GRAND
RE-OPENING SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 20, 2008 6:30 pm
WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO COME AND ENJOY A FEW HOURS OF SKATING, PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, AND
JUST RELAXING AT THE CENTER
The
Wellman Skating Rink is re-opening on Saturday September 20TH at 6:30
pm
after extensive remodeling over the summer.
Thanks in large part to a $42,750 grant from the Washington County
Riverboat Foundation, the City of Wellman was able to add a Maple
skate floor, a new bathroom addition that is ADA accessible, nearly 100
pairs of new skates, new carpeting, and update the interior of the
facility.
The Wellman
Skating Rink has been operating in the same facility for over 50 years. It was originally purchased and moved to
Wellman from Columbus Junction in 1956.
A non-profit organization managed the facility until the fall of 2004
when the organization was dissolved and the skating rink was donated to the
City of Wellman. The City’s Park and
Recreation Director manages the facility with the help of a large group of both
adult and youth volunteers.
From September
through May the rink is open for skating 2-3 times a week. The rink is also utilized for various high
school and elementary gym classes, dances, cardio kick classes, and the City’s
summer recreation program. Organizations
and individuals also rent the facility for private skate parties.
This
is a unique facility that offers a form of family recreation and exercise that
cannot be found anywhere else in the immediate area. Because of this, on an average Saturday
evening you will see 100-125 kids of all ages and from many surrounding
communities enjoying the Wellman Skating Rink!
